Mendelssohn
Elijah
Worth Abbey. Sussex Chorus.
Conductor: Neil Jenkins
Sussex Chorus's perfomance of Mendelssohn's Elijah in Worth Abbey with the London Gala Orchestra conducted by Neil Jenkins was heralded a triumph. A spectacular setting and home to twenty five Benedictine monks, Worth Abbey proved a fascinating backdrop for this neglected choral masterpiece.
"The soloists were a pleasure to listen to. Mezzo Soprano Susan Legg brought out the intricacies in the text and used different colours when portraying the characters. She sang with great clarity."
Mid Sussex Times
"The impressive forces gathered under Neil Jenkins' baton in Worth Abbey quickly reminded us what a masterpiece this still is. A strong line of soloists, led by Michael George, gave the narrative a strong cutting edge."
The Organ
"Susan Legg was an equally inspiring Angel with a warm, smooth emission fitting the words unsurpassingly."
Gordon Bull, Words and Music
